The Mahurangi residence is situated on rural grasslands bounded by farmland, estuary and surrounded by native bush. The project brief was to create a generous and sophisticated family home appropriate to the unique natural characteristics of the site.
The overlapping roof forms and staggered plan echo the stands of windblown Manuka that step up the surrounding hillsides. The house fans out in two separate directions framing views to the wetlands and over surrounding environs.
The floating roof forms follow the natural site contours. Large cantilevered overhangs produce a layered effect and contribute to the light, uncomplicated form of the Mahurangi residence.
The relationship between the house and environment is given equal consideration to the requirements of the family home, including significant regeneration of native planting.
